[ roommate in london ]went to scotland over the weekend, i will journal about that in a day or two, but this skype call my roommate had really annoyed me:so before we left, my group of 10 kids that are on the exchange program here split up and divided ourselves into roommates. my roommate is a nice guy, kinda plain, not a heavy drinker, respectable. but he's been getting really pissy on skype lately, especially with his girlfriend. so today they got in a fight about "how school [here] is going". btw, his girlfriend starts studying in ireland in a few weeks. he just kept going on about how he wasn't here to study abroad, he didn't get why someone would want to go abroad to study from foreign professors. his girlfriend did. he said that he was studying abroad here cuz she wanted to study abroad; implying he really had no interest in studying abroad but did it for his girl... he kept complaining about how he'd like to talk politics and she wanted to know how his day went. i dunno, these seem like really important differences in a relationship. there's been more to it than that, but that kinda gets the gist of what i've overhead while watching Wanted. seems every day they're not getting along, just seems like a relationship that probably isn't going to end well imo. but what do i know. i do know he spent the whole day sitting at his computer or playing cell phone games in class today. talk about not taking advantage of studying in London. now i will admit that i too spent the evening staying in, online and such. but that's because it's just a monday night. and even though i stayed here, i spent a fair bit of the evening looking up stuff for Prague, a tour of the Emirates Stadium, and booking tickets to another Arsenal game. i dunno, i guess i just had to type this all out cuz it really bothered me when he said he didn't want to be here. and it also bothered me that there seem to be some major, fundamental differences between himself and his girlfriend. also, he is blatantly homesick, he's never been outside the US, he talks to his family every night. and i don't just mean family, i mean like extended family. i talk to my parents every few days (they'd rather talk more, but w/e). he's on with his parents now, tomorrow will be his aunt/uncle, then maybe the other aunt/uncle. what's he gonna be like in 2 months? though his parents are flying out here...he'll get even more homesick i bet. just man up |
