Not sure how many of you know this, but.

Since I do get questions time to time on my bird photos - yes, those kestrels are falconry birds. Falconry is training and hunting with a wild raptor. All three of those kestrels were wild-caught by me and trained to fly free but return to me for food, as well as to allow me to hunt with them.

Amelia was my first kestrel. She was a very unusual bird, in that she had some sort of genetic anomaly that made her feathers look very pale. I only had her for a month, unfortunately, before she took off while we were hunting grasshoppers, and I was unable to recover her.

Penelope was my second kestrel, caught shortly after I lost Amelia. Penny, as I called her, shows more standard female kestrel coloration, with copper and black barring on her back and wings. I had her for six months, in which time she caught several insects and a frog. I released her in the spring so that she could migrate and perhaps start a nest. I have since returned to the field I released her in and have seen kestrels there, but I have no way of knowing if she was one of them.

Napoleon is my current kestrel. As you can see from the photo, males have slate-blue wings and orange chests, unlike the streaky copper females. I caught him in the fall, and since then have been exercising him around the house and catching bugs. Today he caught his first bird, a sparrow. I look forward to more successful hunting with him, and hopefully I will be able to release him in the spring like I did with Penelope.

Hey, we're planning an RvB-OR at the Edgefield in Portland this summer. You should come join the fun! Check out the official planning topic in the Oregon RT User group.

The usual mix. Rodents, quail, pheasant, starlings, rabbits (both the little ones and hares), voles, moles, gophers, etc. We do have big game too, but I try to be cautious of that because we have a herd of Columbian White Tail deer who are federally listed as endangered that wanders around. I generally don't let people big game hunt here since most people get too... idiotic excited to determine if their buck is a white tail, black tail, or muley. Plenty of turkey though, and those things are no sweat off my nose when they disappear. The farm itself is 40 acres, but about 20 of that is woods and forest meadow. The other twenty though is gorgeous, glorious open fields that would make a good day of falconry.

Cool, thanks for assuaging my unending curiosity! A lot of my family works in wildlife rehabilitation of one sort or another, my sister volunteered at Chintimini for a while, and at the one down in Springfield (name evades me). She still does rehab, but had to downscale to passerine birds due to illness and physical frailty. I grew up around large raptors, but I never really got into them as much as the mammals. Honestly, most large raptors scare the hay-seuss right out of me... same with macaws, for that matter. I've witnessed first hand what eagles and greater owls are capable of... no freaking way do I have any interest in being on the business end of their "weaponry". I do have to admit, falcons are pretty handsome, and kestrels more than some.

You've got some amazing photography there. I can well appreciate what a labor of love it is to take care of those critters. If you ever get a chance to run through the Albany-Scio area, you should drop me a line. I've got 20 acres of open fields you'd be more than welcome to hunt. (Just let me lock up my chickens first )

Hey.

Just wondering if you saw that I posted a new oneshot on LJ, since you usually comment them.

If you did and didn't feel like commenting, that's fine, just wanted to check.
